SWEPRO 2009-2011: Priorities for trade facilitation

In SWEPRO’s Work Programme for 2009-2011 decided in December 2008 SWEPRO identifies the areas of trade facilitation that are highly prioritised Swedish interests.

EU’s work on the modernised customs code and the reform work for e-customs and Single Window are high on SWEPRO’s agenda, but also the security dimension of international trade and international standardisation are prioritised areas. In the work programme SWEPRO stresses that the WTO negotiations on trade facilitation are of continuous interest to Sweden and that the progress is followed closely. “The WTO negotiations will have a large impact on developments not least in the developing countries, since there is now wide consensus that there are serious gains to be drawn from facilitation”, says Ms Sofia Persson of the SWEPRO secretariat.

SWEPRO is also planning to make efforts to increase the knowledge of payment flows and their importance for simplified trade procedures and also to have a closer look at transit, i.e. goods passing one country on its way to another. Transit is an important issue for many developing countries but also of crucial importance for trade with the Russian federation and with the economies in transition.

SWEPRO also intends to review work procedures and ways to disseminate information. A first step is the publication of SWEPRO Issues in Focus that started in the end of 2008. To develop SWEPRO’s website into a Swedish portal for trade facilitation is an ambition remaining from the previous work programme.
